Curcumin is the primary active constituent of the Asian spice known as turmeric, which has been used medicinally for more than 4,000 years. Traditionally, turmeric has been used for a wide range of applications, from skin conditions to respiratory and gastrointestinal complaints. Modern research has focused on the activity of phenolic compounds in turmeric known as curcuminoids, which have demonstrated powerful antioxidant properties. Based on previous research demonstrating a protective effect for curcumin in nerve injury, researchers examined the effects of three different dosages of curcumin on nerve crush injury in rats. The rats were subjected to nerve crush injury and given either curcumin or a placebo daily for four weeks, with the effects on nerve regeneration measured by morphometric analysis and behavioral tests. The rats given curcumin achieved better nerve regeneration and functional recovery compared to rats given a placebo, and rats given higher doses of curcumin showed better performance than those given lower doses. These findings suggest that curcumin may have a neuroprotective effect that could benefit brain and central nervous system function. Ma J, Liu J, et al.
